Description:
Discover the creative possibilities of recycled materials in this two-day Fabric Mâché Animal Sculpture Workshop! Participants will learn how to transform old T-shirts into beautifully textured, one-of-a-kind animal sculptures using a unique fabric mâché process. We’ll begin by building sturdy armatures from wire, aluminum foil, paper, and tape before layering and sculpting fabric to bring each piece to life. Along the way, you’ll explore techniques for creating expressive forms, adding surface detail, and working sustainably with reclaimed materials. Participants are welcome to bring old clothing or fabric of any material to incorporate into their sculpture, creating a meaningful personal connection to the finished piece, though all materials will be provided and bringing your own fabric is entirely optional. This workshop is suitable for beginners and experienced artists alike, and you’ll leave with a finished sculpture and the skills to continue creating at home. Age 18 and up.
Instructor:
Margie Manogue-Lillich is a multimedia artist and educator based in Ukiah, California with over 25 years of experience in the arts. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Crafts from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and works primarily in needle-felted and fabric maché sculpture, creating narrative works that often feature animals and explore themes of ecology, storytelling, and place.
Through her studio practice and her teaching, she is committed to cultivating curiosity, resilience, and a lifelong love of the arts in the next generation of makers.
This project was funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of Mendocino County.
With the support of the Community Foundation Field-of-Interest Arts and Culture fund, Medium Art Center will hold a series of in-person workshops that will be held over Spring/Summer 2026 at our downtown location. Through hands-on art-making activities, participants will learn from workshop facilitators to tap into their creativity and learn the necessary skills to create art on their own.
Each session will focus on a different medium of art or technique and will consist of hands-on workshops instructed by skilled and experienced artists. We plan to work with the talented instructors in our community and to also bring in outside instructors to bring expanded educational opportunities. We will provide quality tools and supplies for participants to use.
These workshops will provide arts education to the community outside of a school setting. These workshops will also further the growth of our organization's offerings, specifically in the area of providing arts educational resources. The workshops will explore the idea that when provided with the proper tools and techniques, anyone can enjoy the creation of art, as art is for everyone.
