Description:

Reduction printing is a layered printmaking method that transforms a single printing block into a multi-colored image. With each stage, the artist carves away more of the block, printing one color at a time—typically beginning with the lightest and building toward the darkest.

In this class, students will design and carve their own 3-4 color block, learning the essentials of what to cut away (and when). By the end, each student will have created a small edition of their two-color print to trade with one another and will go home with a small deck of prints and a reusable single-color stamp (from your final print layer).

What to bring:

Please bring a few sketches or ideas for a simple image that could be printed in 2-4 colors. The instructor will help you decide what will work best in class.

Instructor:

Meredith Hudson is a printmaker, designer, and photographer from Ukiah, California. Her work in letterpress, block printing, and film photography is grounded in analog and technical methods, which she approaches not only as a creative discipline but also as a tactile and emotional dialogue with the history of each medium. Meredith's work is driven by a commitment to craft, community, and expanding access to arts education through skill-sharing and inclusive creative spaces

This project was funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of Mendocino County.

With the support of the Community Foundation Field-of-Interest Arts and Culture fund, Medium Art Center will hold a series of 5 in-person workshops that will be held over the Summer 2025 at our gallery location. Through hands-on art-making activities, participants will learn from workshop facilitators to tap into their creativity and learn the necessary skills to create art on their own.

Each session will focus on a different medium of art or technique and will consist of hands-on workshops instructed by skilled and experienced artists. We plan to work with the talented instructors in our community and to also bring in outside instructors to bring expanded educational opportunities. We will provide quality tools and supplies for participants to use.

These workshops will provide arts education to the community outside of a school setting. These workshops will also further the growth of our organization's offerings, specifically in the area of providing arts educational resources. The workshops will explore the idea that when provided with the proper tools and techniques, anyone can enjoy the creation of art, as art is for everyone.
